For people who have incredible skill sets, being promoted in their career field is not the biggest challenge in their life. However, just because they have the skill sets does not mean that they are a good leader.

If you lack leadership traits or skills, all the other “awesome” skills won’t make a difference if you are irresponsible as a manager or leader of a group.

You may have heard some phrases like “You are born to be a leader”, or a similar sentence like that. Well, that’s a myth.

People are not born to be the leader. In fact, it takes time to build yourself up and develop the necessary skills needed to be an effective leader anywhere.

Good Attitude

A good attitude is a crucial trait for all leaders. Having a positive attitude is an obligatory aspect to differ you from a follower. With a good attitude, leaders can be helped by their followers voluntarily.

Instead of using harsh authority to get the most out of the followers, using it in a mild way will bring more respect from the followers.

Gone are the days when the leaders use many types of harassments in the workplace and throw their weight around with threats.

Good Example

Being an effective leader is also being a good example. The simple way to explain this is that “if you don’t look good, your team don’t look good”.  The most common situation is where the leader consistently makes the others look bad by scolding, harassing, etc.

It is very crucial to understand that the leader is the head of the group and portrayed by many people. When one person in the front looks bad, the entire team will look bad too.

Though it also depends on the quality of the team, it will also depend on your focus. What do you want to focus on? Would you want to make yourself good or make other people good as well?

An easy example of this is to show gratitude and appreciation for achievements made by your team. Rather than scolding for mistakes, find the solution together. It will not only boost team morality but also build a nice atmosphere in the workplace.

Be Humble

Although it is optional, being humble is very crucial to be an effective leader. Not only your followers makes mistakes, but you make mistakes too. What we often see is that bosses tend to blame something on their employees.

It is important to admit your mistakes without dropping your dignity. Reflect on the errors and discuss with your team better ways to prevent them from happening again.

Be Realistic

As a leader, how do you perceive expectations and goals?

Are they currently realistic?

How far you and your team willing to reach, in order to maximize the efforts?

Have you weighed all the aspects in realizing your goals?

You need to be realistic about the present matters, future needs, as well as your missions. You will be challenged by these when leading your team.

Everything changes in the future. As the time goes by, the challenges can be different and they demand you to evolve.

To be an effective leader, it is wise to consider following characteristics.

Like to Learn New Things

You are motivated to be a better leader in the future… But it won’t happen unless you learn new things. The benefit of liking to learn is that you will constantly get better and more knowledgeable. Although there is no such thing as a perfect leader. It is guaranteed that you will be a better leader.

Flexible

With that in mind, you don’t want to have what is called “stagnant achievement”. You want to be open to all the possibilities. Sometimes, it is also beneficial to consider some different perspectives. What makes sense to you does not always makes sense to other people. That’s why you will need flexibility.

Observant

Nothing will be assessed without being observed. For instance, you won’t know the pros and cons of having some guys in your team until you work with them. Sometimes, a good resume “on paper” is not enough. You need to pay close attention to your staff.

Problem Solver

You need to have the ability to see the best way to deal with things.

Self-Aware

You know your function as a leader but you also need to know your boundaries and limitations. You also know what you do, feel, and react will have a direct impact on other people in your team.

Action Oriented

Plan things which need to be done and without postponing it, take action.

Think Strategically

You must think a few steps ahead. You also must able to understand the current circumstances and can weigh all the possibilities. It is your responsibility to focus on the implications.

Leadership vs Management

Leadership and management are often considered as wholly. It is important to understand that they are different things. However, leadership is an important part of good management.

It is a component which is so attached to management. Leadership is a variable which needs to be owned by the top man in the group. It is defined as potential to influence and direct the group to specific goals and objectives.

Leadership, in many cases, is taken for granted by ones who acquire a managerial position in a group or organization.

Let’s say in our case we are looking at a manager for a food franchise. He must have the leadership traits and characteristics so that he can manage the organization.

While management is completely related to the staffing, controlling, directing, strategizing, structuring, and planning, the leadership is an important component as the part of directing the management function.
