What Is Stoicism

The origin of stoicism began on early the 3rd century AD. It was a school of Hellenistic philosophy that thrived around Roman and Greek. It was founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium, a Hellenistic thinker from Citium, Cyprus. Hellenization or Hellenism itself refers to the spread of Greek culture that had initiated after the downfall of Alexander the Great and the rise of Roman Empire in the 324 BC.

Stoicism is predominantly a philosophy of personal ethics which is appraised by its system of logic and its beliefs on the natural world. Stoicism promoted logical thinking above emotion, for emotion only caused the downfall through unwise judgment. This philosophy was followed by world’s prominent figures, such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, and George Washington.

However, in modern society, stoicism is flourished and viewed as a principal that will make humans less vulnerable and wise by eliminating unnecessary emotions. The philosophy believes that the value of virtue will lead to happiness. The judgment that is made by a person is based on behaviors rather than words.

The world is unpredictable and sometimes human emotion leads to a judgment that is based on external events. It leads to the shift of personal principles in making a decision. Stoicism avoids the shift from happening by promoting mind control to restrain the emotion which allows logic to overtake a person’s ways of life. It does not concern itself with complicated theories and endless debate. It builds for action to become a better human being.

This principal intends to help a human in overcoming life’s problem while still living in harmony with nature. The main goal actually is simple; to have a happy life. The philosophy believes that in order to achieve that goal, humans should not be controlled by impulse and adversity.

A happy life starts with inner peace; the ability to accept and utilize the fact that people are ephemeral creatures. The philosophy teaches humans to transmute those obstacles into fuel that keeps them going without getting hurt due to excessive emotion.

  1. The emotion comes from within

Stoicism believes that stress, fear, and doubt is not caused by outside forces. It is what people tell themselves that create these feelings. They believe daily tasks, problems, and challenges are not capable of making someone feel overwhelmed. It is the thoughts of finishing them that makes people feel depressed and tired.

It is easier to blame the external factors for failure than to admit that the main problem is our way of thinking. When someone avoids facing obstacles, it does nothing but leads them to failure. The next time a depressing thought pops up due to a mistake or an unwise judgment, look inside first before blaming others.

  1. Never give up on failure

Failure is a part of the learning process. No one will be able to achieve anything without trying. Trying leads to some mistakes and failures. If you allow the emotions to take control, it will only lead to despair and hurt. However, when you use logic and understand, you’ll see that failure is a way to get better. This kind of mindset needs practice, endurance, and an open mind.

Becoming brutally honest with yourself is the most difficult thing because you will need to be able to admit all your weaknesses. You cannot justify your failures again by blaming external factors; instead, you have to admit that incapability is the cause of your downfall.

However, at the end of the day, you will be able to recognize your inner strengths. You will be able to design the best strategy to overcome any problem and increase the possibility of success.

  1. Embracing misfortune

Your comfort zone can prevent your growth. Comfort makes you avoid problems and lowers your chances of learning to be a better person. When you are willing to embrace the misfortune, you can develop yourself for greater things. It is not only preparing your thoughts for unforeseen failures but intentionally looking for difficulties and problems.

When you already experience the worst, fear and anxiety will not be your biggest enemy anymore. Fear and anxiety only grow in your mind, not in experience. Anyone who has challenged themselves will know their capability to overcome a problem. The solution is to become familiar with misfortune and how to prepare your mind for the worst-case scenario.

Your inner perception of bad and good will restrain your self-growth. Stoicism believes that everything is an opportunity. It never is a bad bet if you can turn the situation into your advantage. This philosophy is also practiced by most entrepreneurs in starting their business. Training the perception and emotion will strengthen your logic.

Your emotion will not get in the way anymore when someone laughs at your dream or does not appreciate your efforts. There is no good chance or bad chance anymore, only perception. When you have the ability to control your perception, you will be able to turn every single thing into an opportunity to develop yourself.

  1. Nothing last forever

In the end, your achievement, fame, and fortune will not last forever. Human is only a small being in the vast universe, and for that matter, almost everything you have is. Your possession of everything that you have accomplished can be gone in an instant. The most important thing is what you do right in this moment.

Being a good person and doing good things is what mattered to the Stoics. Always stay honest and humble and suppress negative emotions. Remember that it is only you who can decide your happiness and no one can ever take that from you.
